With the Academy Awards come and gone, let’s look back on the fun styles of our leading ladies beauty moments.

One movie that was up for nomination was “Inglorious Basterds”, starring Dian Kruger as a secret agent. Here we see Kruger in full costume with the classic 1950’s style hair pinned back tucked neatly under a hat and big beautiful red lips.

Camila Alves’ Hair Styles on Shear Genius

Posted in General on March 3rd, 2010 by Nancy – Be the first to comment

Camila Alves is host of reality/competition show, Shear Genius on Bravo TV and a Brazilian bombshell. She is a model and designer or better known as the wife of Matthew McConaughey. Alves and McConaughey recently gave birth to a beautiful bundle of joy, Vida.

As the host of Shear Genius, Alves must have the most up to date, fashion forward hairstyles. Here are some easy looks that anyone can do.  Like with most TV shows, not everything you see is as it seems.

Currently bangs or fringe is the biggest trend. Alves is shown here with bang extensions.  She says, “I went home with the bangs attached, and everyone thought I had cut my hair. The last time I had bangs, I was 12.”

This is Alves with long flowing locks which are hair extensions. This is a loose wavy look that can be easily achieved with a curling iron. A fun idea with this look would be to add the bang extension.  Here is a comment from her on long extensions, “Long extensions are tricky. I give women who grow their hair this long a lot of props, but it’s too long for me.”

A pony is always a good classic look for day or evening. Alves states this pony as, “…a work of art.” This look can be effortlessly done with some patience and lots of hair spray.

Another easy hairstyle is the Faux Bob, this style is a timeless look that anyone can pull off.  She explains here how this process was done, “This is my real hair, tucked under. In the back, it full-on looked like a short, wavy-curly bob—I was completely wowed.”

You don’t have to be a runway model to do these trendy and fashion forward looks!

Top A/W 2010 Hair and Makeup Trends from Fashion Week

We spotted twenties-inspired makeup and long, easy ponytails at the DKNY show.  They objective was a well-bred look.  Donna Karen wanted the girls to look young, pretty as if they just got back to their estate from horseback riding with hair loosely gathered.

Souleiman created this look by adding extensions 2-3 shades lighter than the models’ natural hair color at the back of the head to brighten the look.  Then, created a deep side part and pulled the hair into a low ponytail to lay it over one shoulder.

Carolina Herrera deviated from her usual up-do penchant. This season, they opted to leave the hair down for a younger, cooler look that’s not overdone. Her season’s 70’s inspired glamour reflects a familiar Kate Moss that’s a pro at wearing a formal dress and leaving her hair natural.

A familiar deep side part is also used here, emphasizing character and classiness while merging effortlessness into an entire look for the A/W 2010 line.

Another hair down trend appeared at Zac Posen’s show, giving the models a sexy edge.  The look was created with a middle part and easy free-ended curls.  To finish the look, the curls were brushed out to enhance movement on the runway.

Pecheux decided to combine various shades for a deep purple lip color.  To top the stark autumn look off, Peter Som opted for a graphic hairstyle.  To create this look, hairstylist Laurent Philippon styled something simple reflecting the 90’s minimalist Goth.

Romantic wispy bouffants were all the rage at Vera Wang’s.  Reminiscent of Bridgitte Bardot’s sex kitten hair, Jimmy Paul kept the hair soft and loose. To recreate this look, center-part the hair with a comb prior to applying products.  spray the roos with a thickening hairspray for volume, lightly tease if necesary and leave the ends misted and loose for a beachy texture.

From the side, your sectionally teased crown should look big and poufy.  Tease sections at a time for the best result.

To finish off the style, either leave the ends down for a half up half down look.  Leave the fluffly tail of hair hanging loose over the shoulder,  or wrangle the hair into a messy twist and secure with bobby pins.

Pale violet eyes and easygoing hair of downtown girls was the inspiration at the Marc Jacobs’s show. Stylist Guido says the secret to this look is a great cut that lets the hair do its own thing.  He trimmed all the model’s hair to a couple of inches below the collarbone–the perfect length. The result is a sexy, cool girl–the kind of girls you see in East Village, or a cafe in Paris, or around London.

These hairstyles are perfect to polish off an edgy or chic couture look.  The low-maintanence and easily replicated styles transfer easily from the runways into your busy day-to-day life as well.  Just remember to keep things easy, simple and minimal.

Romantic Hairstyles for VDay

Posted in General on February 5th, 2010 by Nancy – Be the first to comment

We’ve showed you how to care for your hair and stay glamorous everyday, but what about for those special occasions?  Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. With a sweetie or just close friends, it’s a day to celebrate the love in your life! To get just the right look, I’ve put together a list of romantic styles that will suit the occasion perfectly.

1. Relaxed Waves

Ahh, yes.  Waves are an iconic style of glamor. It shows off soft, touchable hair.  To recreate this look, work volumizer through you damp hair.  If your hair is already thick, remember to use les product or try a shine instead to reduce frizz.  Follow with blow-drying your hair.  Toss your hair while blow drying to really achieve volume.  On fully dry hair, take a one-inch curling iron, and hold it vertically to spiral oe-inch sections at a time.  Don’t clamp the iron entirely shut.  We want to create loose waves.  Also, start curling from the ear level down.  This will keep the look more loose and natural.  After you’ve curled all your hair, let the waves cool, then finger brush your curls and adjust each piece for a softened effect.

2. Wispy Knot

Start 2 inches ffrom your scalp and tease the roots with a fine-tooth comb using broad strokes. If your hair is already curly, skip this step to avoid too much frizz. Next, gather the hair at the nape of the neck in a low ponytail.  secure it with an elastic about an inch away from the calp.  The goal is to have a loosely gathered ponytail.  Follow this by teasing the underside of the bun, and wind it into a loose bun.  Secure the bun with U-shaped hairpins on each side of the knot.  Be sure to secure the bun at the bottom as well.

3. Soft Blowout

Blow dry the hair straight with a lartge round brush.  To get the best smooth effect, use a boar bristle brush.  Curl the ends with a large-barrel iron.  Arrange small sections and roll the ends under.  If the curl isnt holding, try to hold the curl in place with a large clip until it has cooled. After all the ends are curled, brush through the ends to create large chunky coils.

4. Side Bun

Wearing the bun on the side can create a more charmign feel adn avoid the matronly or librarian feel.  Try it with a deep side part.  Comb the hair neatly and brush it into a low ponytail on the side of your neck.  Be sure the bun is on the opposite side from the part.  Secure the pony tail about 2-inches away from the center so it’s off-center.  If you create the bun too far to the side, the bun will look oddly placed. Tease your ponytail a bit prior to putting it in a bun to help it stay in place.  Using u-shaped pins, secure the bun after twisting it into your desired shape.

5. Jumbo Curls

To create this look, hot rollers are needed.  Rollers allow curls to look more natural than a curling iron.  Depending on your hairtype, use large rollers for thick/coarse hair, and medium-size rollers for fine hair.  Roll hair in sections as wide as the roller and begin from the middle of the head, working backwards.  Be sure to roll the hair completely to your scalp.  Once the curls have set,  brush through the curls with your fingers for a soft finish.

6.  Accessorize

Nothing is more romantic than putting flowers in your hair.  Although, this can proove to be quite a challenge for some.  It’s easy for this look to come off hokey instead of ethereal.  For a sophisticated look, choose a pin with something like an orchid or gardenia.  Avoid gaudy or hippie looking flowers like daisies or bright colors roses.  Choose soft pastel colors or white.  In some rare cases, a bright purple might be doable for brunettes.  The placement of the piece is just as important.  Be sure not to put it directly on the top of your head.  Place the accessory on the side, preferably right avoe an ear, or on the side of a low bun or ponytail.  If it looks odd to you in the mirror, it’s definitely not going to look any better to someone else.

7. Loose Braid

Loose braids are always a no fail look.  Make a messy center part in already dry hair.  Gather the hair very loosely at the nape of your neck.  Let the pieces fall loosely around your face.  Begin by braiding the hair tightly and then secure the ends.  After, pull the sides of the braid to loosen it slightly.  You can even try doing a side-placed braid, or pull the braid to one side for an asymmetrical look.

8.  Lush Wave

For a romantic 40’s Hollywood look, try a polished lush wave.  Begin by blow-drying the hair straight.  If your face shape allows, part your hair down the middle.  Using hot rollers, coil small sections of your hair up and under your scalp.  Once the hair is cool, remove the rollers and  run a paddle brush through the hair.  This will ease the curls into a big wave.  To finish, smooth shin serum through your hands and over the outer layer of the hair, avoiding the roots.

Hopefully, I’ve given you some good ideas to create the perfect look for the lovely holiday! Happy romancing for Valentine’s Day! ;)

5 Easy Ways to Undo Hair Damage

Posted in General on January 27th, 2010 by Nancy – Be the first to comment

Most people tend to overlook the fundamentals of caring for their hair.  Its true, wigs and extensions can remedy and conceal the problems with hair damage or loss, but having healthy hair shouldn’t be forgotten! Here, I’ve listed 5 simple tips applicable to your daily routine to help minimize as well as undo damage done.

1. Turn Down the Heat

Try towel-drying your hair completely before you set a dryer to it.  Make sure you are patting your hair dry and not rubbing it.  Before blowdrying, use a heat-protectie spray or leave-in conditioner.  Use a diffuser to prevent friz and make sure the dryer is on a medium heat setting.  It may take longer to dry at a lower heat, but your hair will thank you.

2. Shampoo Smartly

You dont necessarily have to skip shampooing everyday if your hair is on the oilier side, but you can shampoo more efficiently.  Make sure your hair is drenched thoroughly before you lather up.  Be sure to concentrate on the hair two inches from the scalp since that’s where the most  oil buildup is.  Don’t rinse with hot water.  Rather, use lukewarm water or the coldest water you can stand.  This will help smooth the cuticle and prevent split ends.  Anti-breakage and hair strengthening products will also work well with this routine.

3.  Gentle Blow-Dry

Aside from using lower heat when drying your hair, gentle blow drying can also help reduce damage.   Many are guilty of stretching their hair with a brush while using their blow dryer are a high heat.  The best thing to do is avoid overheating the hair and to keep the nozzle as far away from the hair as possible.  Two inches is usually the norm.  Be sure when brushing through while blow drying to use a brush with smooth synthetic bristles.  Move the brush gently and slowly down instead of yanking.  Think, gentle!

4. Straighten Gently

It’s a constant battle to fight frizz and get beautiful sleek hair.  However, the straightening iron can do more harm than good in the long-run.  Overexposure to the flat iron will destroy your hair.  Don’t keep the flat iron in direct contact with the hair for more than 5 seconds.  Try to not use the flatiron more than once a week.  Irons with ceramic plates are helpful, however this does not mean they don’t damage the hair at all.  If you plan to get your hair chemically straightened, opt for a Keratin treatment and avoid anything called “Brazilian straightening”.  Brazilian straightening tends to contains high levels of formaldehyde–extremely dangerous for the body.

5.  Mend your ends

This is critical to fend off split ends and seal your cuticles.  Aside from using a decent leave-in conditioner, be sure to use a deep conditioning  hair mask or deep conditioner once a week.  This is different than a regular condition since the ingredients are more concentrated.  If your hair has been color-treated, this extra conditioning is even more crucial.  It’s even recommended by some stylists to use a deep conditioner overnight.  Just be sure to place a towel over your pillow, your try wearing a shower cap over the conditioned hair in addition to the towel.

Hopefully these basic tips will help revive your hair over the next few weeks and prevent further damage and/or breakage.  Remember to love your hair!

Kate Gosselin Steps Out w/ Extensions!

OMG! Kate Gosselin transformed over the weekend!  She’s famed not just for her large brood of children, but also for her hideous reverse mullet.

After getting signed onto the morning show The View, Kate revamped her look with a short wavy bob.  That was already considered a big improvement.  I really liked the natural waves here and subtle movement of the cut.

Worked on by the wonders of Ted Gibson (celebrity hair stylist to the likes of Anne Hathaway and Angelina Jolie), Kate’s makeover took a reported 20 hrs!  Gibson joked that 15 hrs were spent convincing her to cut her bangs.  The hefty price tag on this makeover is said to cost $7,000n at Gibson’s salon in New York and Washington.

Kate was spotted while out running errands over the weekend in her hometown Wernersville, Pa.  The new look is definitely shocking!  Jon (Kate’s ex-husband) has yet to comment publicly about her new locks.

TOP 10 Holiday Hair Mistakes

Posted in General on December 18th, 2009 by Nancy – Be the first to comment

Posts as of late have usually been about the latest trends or best styles.  But do you know what to avoid? I’ve listed the top 10 Hair mistakes most commonly spotted and how to make the styles manageable.

1.  Corkscrew Curls

Please avoid this ladies.  They weren’t cute on Nellie Oleson and they won’t be cute on you either. If you’re determined to have curls for the Holidays, try wrapping your hair around the outside of the curling iron barrel.  This will create loose, relaxed waves for a modern look.  Leaving the ends straight can also create texture.  Be sure to break up the ringlets after you’re down curling and finger coming texturizer through for an uneven and natural look.

2. Milkmaid Braids

Unless you work on a dairy farm in Sweden, there is no reason to be donning this hairstyle. Even then if you did work on a dairy farm in Sweden, I’d still detest.  The problem here is that braids tend to create a very tight and stiff look.  You want to look touchable and glamorous.  Could you imagine being approached at a party by a stranger when you have a severe style?  Be sure to resist the urge to part your hair down the middle as well.  This doesnt look good on anyone except Demi Moore (see previous post).  Try using only one braid for texture with the rest of your hair loosely curled and scrunched for a soft, messy look.  Think: Jennifer Aniston.

3. Tendrils

I never found tendrils attractive.  They’re old-fashioned and what would be worse is having corkscrew tendrils. I’m currently shuddering at the thought.  To remedy this, just let loose hairs fall where they may in an updo.  Unkempt and slightly askew is probably the sexiest thing you can recreate in a look for the Holidays.

4. Hairspray Overkill

Just because you’ll be up all night doesn’t mean your hair has to be Aqua-netted into a wall.  It’s a party ladies, not a wind tunnel! To set a style, hold the can about 12 or more inches from your head and spray with a sweeping motion.  The objective is to avoid sticky, crunchy, wet-looking hair.  If you completely lack hand-eye coordination, try spraying on the palm of your hands first and running your hands lightly over your style.

5. Over Teasing

Volume does create a more glamorous look for up-dos, but too much can leave you looking like Frankenstein’s bride.  Tease up to an inch, or two inches at most.  The purpose for teasing is to add subtle volume to a ponytail or high bun and is usually created by back-combing close to the hairline.  Tease first, then put the rest of your hair up.

6.  Cheesy Half-Updo

I find Half-Updo’s tend to look matronly or top-heavy.  Not that this look can’t be attractive, but it’s easy to make the common mistake of pulling too much hair up.   To create flow and balance with this style, be sure your hair is pulled diagonally upward and key areas like the hairline and forehead are brushed/coated hair spray to secure strays.  If you’re feeling brave, you can try teasing the hairline as well.  If in doubt, just recreate the picture below!

7.  Too Many Accessories

It’s definitely easy to dress up a style with hair ornaments, but be careful not to over-do it.  Don’t pair more than one accessory with a style.  If you’ve decided on a headband, don’t add a clip.  If you’ve chosen barrettes, avoid adding flowers and feathers.  Lastly, if you’ve decided on one large statement accessory for the hair, do not wear large earrings or a statement necklace.  Remember,  less is more.

8. Stick-Straight Hair

Sleek, straight hair can be very pretty, but only if it’s not stiff.  To keep your hair from looking flat and lifeless, try spraying your roots with a thickening or volume spray.  Blow dry with a boar-bristle round brush prior to ironing to create lift from the roots, then flat-iron.  This will create an edgy look that still moves.

9.  Slicked-Back Updo

I am not a fan of severe looks, especially not for festive events.  Little known to some, but there is a difference between a classic upsweep and a temporary eye lift with an updo gone wrong.  If you have to do a style with hair pulled back tightly, don’t slick it back with too much product.  Use minimal styling cream to tame flyaways, and always keep in mind your natural part.  Don’t force a harsh part or center part.  For higher updo’s, avoid parting your hair and just pull it straight back.

10. Teased Bangs

The 80’s were cool, but the over-teased and over-hairsprayed bangs are not.  To not make the same mistake now that you did then, avoid using a round brush to blow out your bangs.  Reduce the volume in them by drying your bangs with a flat boar-bristle brush.  At all costs, avoid applying shine serums or anything silicone-based to your bangs.  You’ll look greasy.  If done right, feathery slightly messy bangs can look very romantic (see below).

With this list of commonly made mistakes and how to correct them, you’ll be sure to be a hit at your Holiday parties.  When in doubt, always go for something more natural and simple.  It’s always better to look modest and classic rather than overdone.  Good Luck! :)

Look Fabulous This Winter

Posted in General on November 12th, 2009 by Nancy – Be the first to comment

With the winter chill in the air, everyone’s bundling up for the Holidays.  Seasons determine fashion changes and trends.  Along with packing up summer clothes and bringing out warm woolly sweaters, girls also change out their makeup!

This season, I’m a fan of the winter-white look, stark and bare makeup with rosy cheeks for day, and dark smokey plum eyes, defined brows and barely-there pink shimmer gloss lips for evening events.

And for the hair? Well, I’ve been inspired by the cover of November’s W Magazine.  Demi Moore wears her iconic raven hair 24/7, but I think it’s the perfect winter hair style.  The ultimate winter look: pair sky high boots, a cashmere Vince sweater with leggings and fantastically long ebony center-split hair.  It’s perfectly edgy, classy, and refined high fashion look that’s low-maintanence and easy to put together.

At 47, Demi Moore is still a goddess.  I remember her from St. Elmo’s fire as part of the whole Brat Pack scene from the 80’s.  Even then, her beauty was striking as was her fashion. Below, is the perfect Holiday look.  Simple, loose hair with a stunning dress and statement jewelry.

photos courtesy of wmagazine.com

Demi’s always been known for her long dark locks.  She’s never strayed from her iconic style of center-split straight raven hair.  She’s worn it a number of waves but has never changed the basic style and cut.  Honestly, there’s no need to! Don’t be afraid to be simple this season.

photos courtesy of wmagazine.com

photos courtesy of wmagazine.com

The only thing Demi’s stylist has done to her hair is add some texture for a more evening appeal.  You can re-create this look with a medium sized barrel curling iron, slowly curling 1″ sections at a time.  Let them be a bit messy and non-uniform.  You want that slightly unkempt look for this style. Finish up with some texturizing spray all over, and scrunch a bit from the bottom up.

Personally, I cheat. My hair is naturally wavy, so I just dry my hair halfway and finish up with a diffuser and then scrunch.  I’ll tame some random hairs with a curling iron if necessary. Pretty easy, right?

Here’s Demi, with her drool-worthy younger husband.  Now that we have the hair, perfected the makeup and spent tons on fabulous clothes…where do we find the guy? LOL.

Absolutely amazing.  I’m totally inspired! I hope you are too! ;)

Fresh Accessory Ideas!

Posted in General on October 16th, 2009 by Nancy – Be the first to comment

As beauty addicts, we’re always looking for ways to improve our look or redefine ourselves in any visible way.  We change our makeup, hair and clothes according to the seasons and even between seasons!  For social butterflies, being slaves to the ever-changing fashion world is a must.  We’re constantly on the prowl for the new and never-before-seen looks and to show it off at the next event first!  For those that have run out of ideas or are looking for a more cost-effective way to create a new look, I’ve gathered some inspiring hair ideas for your weekend!

Personally my favorite but a bit hard to pull off is the over-usage of plastic hairbands seen on the YSL runway.  Keep in mind that you’ll need to layer and use anywhere from 6-10 various plastic bands. This look is probably best for oval shaped faces, but you can try it just to see if it flatters your bone structure.

Begin by sweeping your hair into a high knot pony tail.  Since the plastic bands expand and conform to your headshape, you canbegin by starting at the front of your forhead and slipping each band one by one back.  It should look like the photo below.  Try it with a messy knot on top, or leave your ponytail down for a different look.  I’d probably wear this style with edgier/darker clothes since the look is considered sleek and harsh.

For a different twist on the ponytail, slick your hair back and use an elastic to create a low ponytail. Split the ponytail into two smaller ones.  Attach colored extensions on either half or even both.  Once they’re attached, twist each half of the pony tail w/ the extensions.  Then, twist both halves of the pony tail together to create the look below.  Secure it with an elastic at the ends, or you can continue to twist the hair into a bun and secure with pins.  Zac Posen kept his runway look fresh, sleek and upbeat with colored extensions in all his models’ ponytails.  Try this for a brunch get together or simple dinner outing.

For those with a more romantic and whimsical personality, the look below might be more suitable.   Seen all over the runway of Chanel were wispy face framing strands of hair and high loose knots of hair embellished with a large jeweled accessory.   Everything was seen from gold leaves to large flowers.  This is personally my favorite look.  It’s probably the easiest to re-create and will take all but 5 minutes.

Begin by blowdrying your hair with a flat-paddle brush to smooth the hair.  If necessary, use mousse to create a bit of volume before you blowdry.  After your hair is dry, finger comb and pull up into a high ponytail. Slightly angle it to the side and tuck loose hairs under for a messy slightly off-center knot.  Finish off the look by pinning large flowers to the base of the ponytail/knot or pinning large jeweled accessories near the crown.  The look is both fanciful and sweet! Although, I do think there are age limitations to this look. :P

Avant-garde anyone?  This one was just interesting so I had to post it.  Feathers for bangs! I would only approve this look for an evening cocktail event or museum gala opening.  All others, steer clear of this. You could very well end up being stared at for all the wrong reasons!

With so many new hair ideas to choose from, you’ll surely be the talk of the town this weekend! ;)
